Sexagenarian guitar god [lastfm]Carlos Santana[/lastfm]‘s latest endeavor, the all-covers Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time (out Sept. 21), sports an all-star roster of collaborators, among them[lastfm]Chris Cornell[/lastfm], [lastfm]Scott Weiland[/lastfm], [lastfm]Nas[/lastfm], [lastfm]Janelle Monáe[/lastfm], [lastfm]Linkin Park[/lastfm]‘s [lastfm]Chester Bennington[/lastfm],[lastfm]Gavin Rossdale[/lastfm], and others.
[lastfm]The Beatles[/lastfm] standard “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” featuring [lastfm]India.Arie[/lastfm] and cellist [lastfm]Yo-Yo MA[/lastfm], will be released as the first single, and, like his Grammy-winning 1999 album Supernatural, Santana co-produced the record with [lastfm]Clive Davis[/lastfm].
Among the cuts to look for: [lastfm]Nas [/lastfm]and [lastfm]Monáe[/lastfm]‘s hip-hop take on[lastfm]AC/DC[/lastfm]‘s “Back in Black”; Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” with Cornell on vocals; [lastfm]the Doors[/lastfm]‘ keyboardist Ray Manzarek teaming with Bennington on “Riders on the Storm”; Rossdale singing [lastfm]T. Rex[/lastfm]‘s “Bang a Gong”; and Weiland covering the Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’.”
A deluxe edition of Guitar Heaven will include bonus recordings of [lastfm]Red Hot Chili Peppers[/lastfm]‘ “Under the Bridge” and [lastfm]Creedence Clearwater Revival[/lastfm]‘s “Fortunate Son,” as well as a behind-the-scenes DVD.
